I work methodically and rarely do fast, motion-grabbing squiggles (partly because dry eye has abraded my corneas, causing double vision). But when there's action to be captured, such as Native American dancers, dogs in the park, or birds preening, I will start the with general outlines and wait for the movement to come around again in order to capture more detail. Portraits are easier, because people are generally willing to hold still for a little while.
I use pencil, various types of markers, colored pencils, and some oil pastels. I also sketch on my iPad with a pressure-sensitive stylus, and have been tried different drawing and painting apps.
